Call to Arms

Volunteers play an important role in our mission to create a cancer free future.

Our volunteers help us provide cancer-related information, support services and education programs throughout Queensland and help implement our fundraising campaigns in their local areas.

Our process

Our volunteers are treated with the same respect as paid staff, and are offered positions that best recognise their skills and personal preferences. Volunteers are provided with support and training to perform their chosen tasks.  All volunteers are required to attend an orientation session, featuring an organisational overview and an introduction to volunteering.

Many of our volunteer roles do not require any additional training but some roles require particular skills, specialist training and/or experience.

Contact us

If you’re interested in volunteering with us, we’d like to hear from you. To contact us please fill out this online form or call us on (07) 3634 5244.

Volunteer Voice Newsletter

The Volunteer Voice newsletter is published quarterly, and helps Cancer Council Queensland volunteers stay informed about the organisation.

It is also an avenue to provide information and recognition to volunteers for their work both within the community and the organisation.

Volunteer opportunities:

please note that volunteer role availability may be subject to regional and seasonal availability

Branches

Our branch volunteers implement our programs and activities in their community. This includes fundraising, prevention and early detection, and patient and community services.

Whether in Ingham or Ipswich, branch volunteers make it possible for people to participate in a variety of activities and build our profile in their area. They help develop strong cancer control and support networks throughout Queensland.

Branch members meet regularly and are structured to include a chairperson, office bearers and other voluntary members.

Administration volunteering

Our administration volunteers help us communicate with our supporters, supporting us with photocopying, collating materials, preparation for mail outs, computer and data entry, filing, opening returned mail including money, and packing kits and stock.

These opportunities are only available in our offices during business hours.

Fundraising volunteering

Our dedicated fundraising volunteers help us pack fundraising kits, prepare signage and promotional material, and staff merchandise stalls and registration desks.

Retail volunteering

Our retails volunteers help run our SunSmart Shop in Brisbane, and our Daffodil Shops on the Gold Coast. They are responsible for mail orders, stocking shelves, pricing and layout of merchandise, sorting and counting stock.

Volunteers in this area must have retail experience and be available for one full day each week. Volunteer opportunities are only available during business hours.

Cancer Connect

Our Cancer Connect volunteers provide peer support to those who are newly diagnosed or at any stage in their cancer journey. They provide social, emotional and practical support. Cancer Connect volunteers have experienced cancer and are matched with people currently sharing a similar experince.

Please contact the Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20 (toll free) for more information.

Breast Cancer Support Service

Our Breast Cancer Support Service volunteers provide peer support to those who are newly diagnosed or at any stage in their cancer journey. They provide social, emotional and practical support.

Our Breast Cancer Support Service volunteers are all breast cancer survivors who have undergone a compulsory two day training session.

Please contact the Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20 (toll free) for more information.

Hospital visitors

Our volunteer hospital visitors provide social and emotional support to patients undergoing cancer treatment, and their families and carers.

Our hospital visitors have had a personal experience with cancer. For the volunteer’s physical and emotional wellbeing, it is highly recommended that a suitable time has passed since their experience with cancer. A compulsory two day training course is required for all hospital visitors.

Please contact the Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20 (toll free) for more information.

Community education program

Our Community Speakers and display volunteers deliver education sessions and displays about cancer awareness and prevention to organisations and community groups. All Community Speakers and display volunteers must undergo compulsory training.

Sewing volunteering

Our sewing volunteers make turbans and stoma covers from a pattern. Volunteers are required to provide their own sewing machine and sew from home.

Data entry

Our data entry volunteers process data for our Cancer Council Helpline, our data services team or Viertel Centre for Research in Cancer Control. Volunteer opportunities in this area are only available during business hours in our Brisbane office.

Transport volunteering

Our transport volunteers use their own vehicles to drive people with cancer to/from accommodation units, hospitals, shopping centres and medical appointments.

Transport volunteers must undergo a compulsory two day training session. Opportunities are available in Brisbane, Rockhampton and Townsville.

Corporate volunteering

Why not get involved in our corporate volunteering program?

Businesses who sign up for corporate volunteering encourage staff to volunteer in the not-for-profit sector.

Our volunteers are dedicated to our cause, and we value their contribution to the campaign against cancer.

There are many ways businesses can get involved in corporate volunteering, such as individual, team, or whole-of-company volunteering. You may like to volunteer for just one day, or more regularly, like once a month.

At Cancer Council Queensland, we welcome and encourage corporate volunteering. If you’re interested in finding out more, we’d like to hear from you.
