We have reviewed our school’s SunSmart practices and policy and believe they still meet the essential criteria as outlined by Cancer Council Queensland’s SunSmart Schools Program.
The policy is implemented all year round
The school ensures that wherever practicable, outdoor activities take place before 10am and after 3pm
A combination of sun protection measures are considered when planning all outdoor activities(eg camps, excursions, sporting events, physical activity lessons, swimming carnivals)
The school has sufficient shade or is working towards increasing the number of trees and shade structures so as to provide adequate sun protected areas in the school grounds
Children are encouraged to use available areas of shade for outdoor activities
We require assistance with shade, please send us shade information
All children wear a broad brimmed (minimum 7.5cm brim), legionnaire or bucket hat (deep crown and minimum 6cm brim) whenever they are outside
Children who do not have appropriate hats or sun protective clothing are asked to play in the shade and/or are unable to participate in outdoor activities
Parents are encouraged to dress their children in appropriate sun protective clothing; shirts/dresses with a collar and sleeves and longer style shorts/skirts when at the school
The use of SPF 30+ broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen is encouraged, with time for application of sunscreen allowed
Staff, families and visitors to the school are encouraged to act as role models by practising SunSmart behaviours
Educational activities and programs on skin cancer prevention are included in the school\'s program
SunSmart behaviour is regularly reinforced and promoted to the whole school community (eg. via newsletters, parent meetings)
The use of wrap-around sunglasses that meet Australian Standard AS/NZS 1067:2003 is encouraged
The school reviews its sun protection policy annually to ensure it is up to date and effectively implemented
