New support tool for cancer patients launched

In a first for Queenslanders affected by cancer, a new resource is available to help patients and their carers and families cope through cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Cancer Council Queensland’s Cancer Counselling Service has proudly launched the new resource, Coping with cancer - a guide for people with cancer, their families and friends in celebration of Daffodil Day – the time of year to buy a daffodil in support of all Queenslanders affected by cancer.

Previously, support resources have been adapted from booklets from overseas. This is the first booklet of its kind to be produced entirely by the Cancer Council’s Cancer Counselling team.

Executive Manager of the Cancer Counselling Service, Sandy Hutchison, said Coping with cancer was developed out of necessity, to support Queenslanders affected by cancer.

“Around 21,000 Queenslanders are diagnosed with cancer each year, and for most people, this will be a very difficult time as they try to come to terms with their diagnosis, make choices about medical treatments and face unexpected demands,” she said.

“Our booklet aims to guide patients and their families through the cancer experience, an experience that, for most people, is new and challenging.

“I’m very happy to be launching Coping with cancer in time for Daffodil Day. It’s great for our wonderful volunteers and dedicated Daffodil Day supporters to see how the funds they work so hard to raise are used, to better support the Queensland community affected by cancer.

“The booklet explains some common reactions people with cancer may have; practical strategies; different coping suggestions and ways to build good relationships with the health professionals involved in their care.

“A cancer journey is not travelled alone, so our booklet also contains information to help loved ones and friends, as well as the patient,” Ms Hutchison said.

Cancer survivors from across the State have been part of the review process for the new booklet.

“I would like to congratulate everyone involved, this is an excellent booklet and will be such a huge help to cancer patients and their loved ones. I'm so impressed with every part of it,” a survivor said.

“I found the content very informative, easy to read and to use, and very grounding for those struggling with the trauma and feelings associated with a cancer diagnosis.”

Cancer Council Queensland is an independent, community-based charity. The achievements of Cancer Council Queensland are made possible by the generosity of Queenslanders.
