Come on Aussie – help your mates get healthy

Amidst the cockroach races, backyard BBQs and thong-throwing competitions, Cancer Council Queensland and Diabetes Queensland hope this Australia Day will see Aussies helping mates get healthy.

With predictions that 65 per cent of the state’s adult population will be overweight or obese by 2020, and currently 1 in 4 Queensland children overweight or obese, it’s time for Aussies to fly their flags high for healthy living.

Cancer Council Queensland, Diabetes Queensland, Heart Foundation and Nutrition Australia QLD have combined forces to support the Swap It, Don’t Stop it campaign, which encourages Aussies to lose their bellies without losing out on the things they love by committing to small swaps daily.

Health Promotion Officer at Cancer Council Queensland, Susan Lingard, says there’s no better time to start swapping than our national day.

“This Australia Day, why not swap a snag on the barbie for a salad, swap watching TV for setting up a game of backyard cricket with the family or swap a meat pie for a mango to make the best of our state’s fresh fruit and produce,” Ms Lingard said.

“Aussies love to help their mates, and I believe Australia is ready to combat unhealthy lifestyles and face the obesity statistics.

“We want healthy Aussies and joining forces while we celebrate what’s great about our country is a great way to start.”

People can show their mateship and help others achieve their healthy lifestyle goals with the ‘12 Weeks to a Healthier Life’ planner designed to help create new habits for the long-term.

The planner, along with more tips on eating healthy and engaging in more physical activity, is available at www.swapit.gov.au. People can also contribute their Australia Day Swap It Tips at the website.
