Ben Davis gears up for men with cancer
September 8, 2010
Brisbane sports guru Ben Davis is calling on locals to gear-up for Cancer Council Queensland’s FORMULA RUN this September 19, raising funds for and awareness of men’s cancers during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
As Channel Seven’s leading sports journalist and the inaugural ambassador for FORMULA RUN, Mr Davis is urging the men of Brisbane and their loved ones to hit the streets and help Cancer Council Queensland to raise awareness and funds for the prevention and early detection of cancer in men.
FORMULA RUN is a 5km and 10km run that will kick off at Brisbane’s Botanic Gardens and wind its way around the river to end at South Bank.
Mr Davis said he was proud to be involved in the event and encouraged others to get involved too.
“I consider myself to be extremely fortunate that personally I haven't been affected by cancer -- although my Grandparents were -- which makes me fully aware that I can never take that for granted.
“With one in two Queensland men diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime, everybody knows someone who has been affected by cancer and it’s everybody’s responsibility to do what they can to help find the formula to end cancer.
“In Brisbane, 4,327 men will be diagnosed with cancer this year – this is 700 more Brisbane men than women who are living with cancer.
“So if you’re a dad, a brother, a son or a mate then get your friends, families and workmates together and register yourself and your team today,” Mr Davis said.
All funds raised from FORMULA RUN will support Cancer Council Queensland’s valuable work in cancer research, patient support services and education programs.
Men and women of all ages and abilities are invited to register for the event.
Cancer Council Queensland’s trained volunteers will man health education pit stops along the course to share tips and tricks on how to live a cancer smart lifestyle with all participants and supporters.
Registration costs $35 and closes on September 13.
