Queensland researchers use family link to prevent bowel cancer

June 8, 2010

Cancer Council Queensland researchers are developing an exciting new trial program, CanPrevent, for the first degree relatives of colorectal (bowel) cancer survivors, to help them to reduce their risk of developing colorectal cancer.

Rhianna Murray, Research Officer at Cancer Council Queensland’s Viertel Centre for Research in Cancer Control, said that first degree relatives include siblings, children or parents of colorectal cancer survivors.

“All first degree relatives of colorectal cancer survivors are invited to be involved in CanPrevent, to help our researchers understand the specific needs of this group, their understanding of cancer screening and their motivations for leading a healthy lifestyle,” she said.

Participation would involve attending a focus group discussion session to provide the research team with valuable insight and feedback to assist them in the development of this program.

“Evidence shows that first degree relatives of people diagnosed with colorectal or bowel cancer face an increased risk of developing this disease themselves,” Ms Murray said.

“The good news is that we know by making healthy lifestyle choices, such as enjoying physical activity and a healthy diet, the risk of developing colorectal cancer, other cancers and other chronic diseases is significantly decreased.

“CanPrevent aims to encourage screening uptake and improve health behaviours and quality of life of first degree relatives of colorectal cancer survivors.

“Cancer Council Queensland researchers are currently conducting a large trial of a telephone-delivered lifestyle support program for colorectal cancer survivors.

“The study is still in progress, but those receiving the program are already reporting benefits. In light of the evidence for the increased risk to people with a family history of colorectal cancer, we have decided to trial a similar program to reduce the risk for first degree relatives, hence CanPrevent,” she said.

Anyone interested in participating in CanPrevent, or who would like further information, is encouraged to contact Rhianna Murray, Research Officer at Cancer Council Queensland, as soon as possible, by calling 07 3634 5371 or by email RhiannaMurray@cancerqld.org.au
