CCQ celebrates 50 years with $100,000 boost for cancer care

Cancer Council Queensland grant to enhance support for Queenslanders affected by cancerCommunity health providers are set to benefit from a new $100,000 Cancer Council Queensland grant to enhance support for Queenslanders affected by cancer.

The grant program, launched to celebrate CCQ's 50th Anniversary, will enable eligible organisations to apply for funding of up to $15,000 for cancer-related initiatives.

CCQ's Executive Manager of Community Services, Claire Kelly, said the Community Grants Program would have a direct positive impact on cancer patients.

"This initiative will improve comfort and quality of life for cancer patients, funding equipment such as recliner chairs, pressure relief mattresses, or other items that help to ease some of the discomfort and distress often caused by cancer treatment," she said.

"The grant program will also provide a much-needed boost for local health care providers, allowing them to deliver a high quality of service."

Queensland organisations with a shared goal of providing support to people affected by cancer are eligible to apply for a CCQ Community Grant.

"Our aim is to reach out into communities that may be struggling to provide resources or services to cancer patients, and applications will be judged by CCQ Branch Volunteers across the state, ensuring that regional communities are well cared for," Ms Kelly said.

"Community needs will be the key criteria in determining how the grant funding is awarded.

"The grants will be for initiatives that make a real difference in the lives of patients, to make cancer treatment more tolerable."

Examples of possible items for funding applications include special recliners, mattresses, cooling devices, soft furnishings, or other individual care items.

All public and private community health care providers in Queensland, including hospitals, are eligible to apply. Applications will not be granted to fund core services, essential medical equipment or staff.

Applications for the 2011 round of funding open today and close on May 13.
