Bring hope to future generations – leave a bequest in your Will

Professor Ian Frazer

Each year in Queensland, over 19,000 people are diagnosed with cancer. The mission of Cancer Council Queensland is to one day beat this disease that strikes one in three members of our community.

But we can't do it alone.

Including a bequest to Cancer Council Queensland in your Will is one of the most thoughtful gifts you can give. Bequests provide around one third of our income, which goes towards the fight against cancer.

With your support Cancer Council Queensland can continue to provide support to cancer patients and their families; fund and conduct extensive research programs in an endeavour to find better and more effective treatments for all forms of cancer; and ultimately, find a cure.

To include Cancer Council Queensland in your Will, we recommend seeking advice from a solicitor or trustee company. If you are interested in leaving a bequest to Cancer Council Queensland you may like to take advantage of the Free Wills Service.

When you include Cancer Council Queensland in your Will, you can direct your donation towards general programs where there is a current need, or select a specific program to direct your donation.

Fay and David's Story

David and Fay decided to leave a bequest to Cancer Council Queensland after David was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Fay told us,

“When David told me he had cancer I just couldn’t believe it – he had never ever been sick with anything.

“I cried all night.

David received chemotherapy for six months, which reduced the tumour, but the side effects included hair loss, weight loss and nausea.

Fay and David

His brother, only one year older, had been diagnosed the previous year with acute myeloid leukaemia. Unfortunately, during David’s chemotherapy treatment, his brother passed away

“You can imagine how David was feeling at this time – unable to visit his brother prior to his death or even attend his funeral. Our family was our biggest support and helped us through the ordeal. It was difficult for all of us.”

After David fortunately went into remission, they decided to leave a bequest to Cancer Council Queensland.

“The bequest we have made in our Wills for Cancer Council Queensland makes us feel we are giving something back to help this wonderful organisation.”

“We are so grateful to Cancer Council Queensland for their ongoing research, knowing that David has been so very fortunate to have had such wonderful treatment in saving him from this cancer.”

Fay and David’s granddaughter will hopefully not have to go through the pain and suffering he did because of funding from sources like bequests. These funds help finance essential cancer breakthroughs, such as Professor Frazer’s cervical cancer vaccine.

The fact that there has been such breakthroughs in what is currently the world’s second most common cancer in women is astounding.
